Welcome to the Santa Maria Public Airport Master Plan project website.  This website has been created to provide a venue to distribute draft Master Plan materials to interested members of the public and to allow the public to provide input into the master planning process.

The Santa Maria Public Airport (SMX) Master Plan Study is being undertaken to evaluate the airport’s capabilities and role, to forecast future aviation demand, and to plan for the timely development of new or expanded facilities that may be required to meet that demand.  The ultimate goal of the Master Plan is to provide systematic guidelines for the airport’s overall maintenance, development, and operation.

The Master Plan is intended to be a proactive document which identifies and then plans for future facility needs well in advance of the actual need for the facilities.  This is done to ensure that the Santa Maria Public Airport District (SMPAD) can coordinate project approvals, design, financing, and construction to avoid experiencing detrimental effects due to inadequate facilities.

Following Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines for a qualifications-based consultant selection process, the SMPAD selected the project team of Tartaglia Engineering and Coffman Associates, Inc., to undertake the Master Plan update.  Tartaglia Engineering has been the engineer of record for the airport for a number of years and Coffman Associates is a national aviation consulting firm specializing in airport planning studies.  The study process is anticipated to take approximately 18 months to complete, followed by agency reviews and approvals.  The structure of the Master Plan follows FAA guidelines and the FAA will consider and approve the aviation forecasts and the airport layout plan (technical drawings of the current and planned airport layout).

Draft chapters of the Master Plan will be presented to and reviewed by a Planning Advisory Committee (PAC) that is comprised of various airport stakeholders, including representatives from the City of Santa Maria, FAA, Caltrans, airport businesses, tenants, and area economic development interests.  Two public information workshops are planned at strategic points in the process to encourage citizens to learn more about the future plans for the airport.

Please download and review the draft materials as they come available in the Master Plan section of this website. If you have comments or questions regarding the Master Plan materials, please feel free to submit them to the planning team here. Comments received will be given due consideration during the preparation of the Master Plan.
